Boiler description:

Italian boiler for wood chips and biomass

The FACI FSS wood chip boiler with a unique three-cylinder high-efficiency heat exchanger is designed to heat infrastructure facilities using wood chips as fuel at natural moisture content.

Understanding the importance of uninterrupted operation in any situation, Italian engineers developed a backup fuel operating algorithm — already in the basic configuration the boiler runs on pellets automatically, and on coal, firewood and briquettes manually. Optionally the boiler can be fitted with additional equipment to run on coal automatically.

Unique cast iron burner

FACI's Italian engineering team developed specially for wood chip boilers a unique burner with 2 combustion zones (the main zone and a burn-out zone).

This method of burning wood chips at natural moisture, where unburnt fuel from the main burner zone falls under its own weight into the second zone and burns out completely there, is considered perhaps the most efficient way to burn wood chip fuel

The path of air supply and movement in the combustion zone has no equivalent on the market and is the pride of the FACI plant.

FACI two-zone wood chip burners with a unique air supply system have proven themselves excellently among European users and are rightly considered the most popular wood chip burners on the European and Russian market for wood chip boilers.

Three-cylinder heat exchanger

Horizontal heat exchangers are the signature feature of FACI boilers. The boilers are designed so that the flue gases from the burnt fuel pass repeatedly AROUND the cylindrical heat exchangers.

This makes it possible to achieve maximum heat recovery from the flue gases and an efficiency of more than 90%.

Twin-auger fuel feed with agitator

The FACI FSS fuel feed is one of the safest in the world. Safety is achieved by installing 2 reinforced augers with independent high-power geared motors, which separate the burner feed zone from the boiler's day hopper.

Anti-smoke system additionally directs air into the combustion zone through the lower auger, preventing smoke from entering the boiler room through the day hopper.

These solutions have achieved maximum operational safety , which is especially important at sites with full automation and no permanent staff.

Taking into account the specifics of the fuel (wood chips), FACI's Russian-Italian engineering team developed a unique fuel agitation system in the boiler's day hopper, which prevents wood chips from bridging in the hopper and stopping combustion.

Vibrating hopper of 8.5 cubic metres

Already in the basic configuration there is an option to install an additional 8.5 m³ vibrating hopper, which makes the boilers suitable both for small businesses — sites with a small area — and as part of existing or new block-modular boiler houses used by heat supply companies and large enterprises to heat infrastructure facilities

Taking into account the specifics of the fuel (wood chips), FACI's Russian-Italian engineering team developed a unique fuel agitation system in the day hopper of the boiler that prevents wood chips from bridging in the hopper and stopping combustion.

Touchscreen control system
A high level of automation thanks to the new touchscreen control system. The display has an intuitive touch interface in which all algorithms have been carefully calibrated and tested.
Compatible with the "DI STRADA Vibro 8.5 m³" hopper

Even the basic boiler configuration can be fitted with an additional 8.5 m³ vibrating hopper. This makes the boilers suitable both for small businesses, for example sites with a small area, and as part of existing or planned block-modular boiler houses used by heat supply companies or large enterprises to heat major infrastructure facilities.

Taking into account the specifics of the fuel (wood chips), FACI's Russian-Italian engineering team developed a special fuel agitation system in the boiler's day hopper. This prevents wood chips from bridging and keeps combustion going inside the boiler.

Compatible with the "FONDO VIVO store"

You can combine the boiler equipment with an automated solid fuel store "FONDO VIVO store" made by the FACI plant. A store capacity of 100 m³ and more solves the problem of storing large amounts of fuel, while the automated feed system saves effort and money on supplying fuel to the boiler house.

Build a heating system based on FACI boilers and connect them to the automated "FONDO VIVO store" to get an autonomous heating system that needs almost no human intervention. The automation adjusts the fuel feed rate and volume according to the settings and instantly warns of any problems by SMS or a notification in a dedicated app.

The robust design of the automated "FONDO VIVO store" made by FACI can handle large amounts of solid fuel without bridging, so your boilers are always supplied with fuel.

This unit generates heat using ordinary wood chips as fuel. The user gets an autonomous heat source that can be used even where other heat carriers are not available. FACI FSS boilers are widely bought to heat industrial and office premises. They are also a natural choice for heat supply companies serving municipal and residential buildings.  Sawdust should make up no more than 30% of the total fuel mass. Full automation of the equipment ensures high efficiency.  The unit is multifunctional. Fitted with a water tank, an automatically fed wood chip boiler can also serve as a water heater, and its energy efficiency makes operation cost-effective.

How the boiler house is arranged

Energy is produced by ordinary combustion, just like in a boiler house heating a heating circuit, so the design of the automatic boiler is in many ways similar to a boiler house. The unit includes the following assemblies and components:
  • Combustion chamber with ash collection elements and a flue.
  • Water jacket for home heating — a drum or coil filled with water or another heat carrier.
  • Water tank when the unit is used as a source of hot water.
  • Ash pan.
  • Wood chip feeder. Operates automatically.
  • Monitoring sensors.
  • Fuel hopper.
  • Flue outlet.
Note that the heating main of the building must be connected to the water jacket. All equipment is fully automated, including maintenance operations: for example, soot removal and flue cleaning are self-cleaning. This is achieved with smart engineering and modern technology. The broken-line flue has spring-loaded faces that are tensioned and released by a special mechanism, so ash does not build up on the walls and falls down to the self-cleaning auger located under the burner. The ash enters the auger and is discharged into a separate compartment. As a result, the unit needs inspection and servicing only once every 2 months.

Operating modes

The controller, servo drives and sensors make it possible to create different operating modes according to adjustable parameters, which is very convenient. There are 3 options: optimal output, maximum output and pause. Maximum output mode heats up quickly to the maximum heat output. Then its intensity decreases and the unit maintains a constant combustion temperature. Medium load is an economical option that heats the room for a long time from a single auger load. In this mode the unit maintains a constant temperature; if it rises after medium-output mode is switched on, the fuel feed stops. This keeps the ambient temperature optimal with low energy consumption. Pause mode means minimal burning of sawdust to keep the chamber warm, so that cold air coming through the chimney does not cool the furnace. Thanks to this, heating up at full output is more economical.

Protection systems and operating modes

All operations are fully automated. The water jacket adjacent to the chamber is heated by combustion. Wood chips are fed from the hopper to the boiler by auger conveyors driven by modern electric motors working together with the controller. When combustion intensity drops, the controller commands the drives, which turn the bladed augers, keeping combustion in the chamber continuous and intense. Once sawdust is delivered to the boiler, a piezoelectric igniter lights it. High efficiency is achieved by intensive combustion of the sawdust, made possible by full parameter control and automation. To use the boiler for hot water, a water tank must be ordered separately. It is installed next to the chamber, so the long-burning sawdust boiler acts as the heating element. This means there is no need to spend fuel constantly maintaining the water temperature. Multi-level, multifunctional protection guards against risks such as:
  • Boiling water. Temperature is monitored by 3 sensors: at the inlet, above the boiler and at the outlet.
  • Smoke entering the room. A draught sensor in the furnace monitors smoke levels.
  • Interrupted wood chip feed to the boiler. The hopper is also equipped with a special auger that prevents the chips from caking.
This protection allows wood chip and sawdust heating equipment to be left running for long periods.  The equipment has twin-auger fuel feed and two independently controlled gearboxes. This allows each auger to be controlled separately while keeping operation as safe as possible and protected against fuel ignition inside the hopper. The hopper agitator has been substantially upgraded to prevent any blockages, so fuel is fed as evenly as possible. The developer has also improved the control panel and controller.
