Automatic coal boilers are a real alternative to conventional ones — a kind of "golden mean" between ease of maintenance and fuel cost. In operation an automatic unit still needs some human involvement, namely:
filling the hopper;
removing ash mechanically;
ensuring an uninterrupted power supply.
The main advantage of these units is that, unlike conventional solid fuel boilers, they do not need constant close attention and laborious maintenance. Installing such a unit reduces the cost of coal heating for a country house or an industrial facility.
How a heating boiler with automatic coal feed works
Automatic coal boilers use far less fuel than conventional solutions — on average 1-2 times less. Another advantage is higher efficiency: actual efficiency is about 80-90%.The boiler needs sized coal of no more than 50 mm. It burns almost completely, leaving a minimum of ash. Spent fuel is cleaned out once a week, when the next batch of coal is loaded. Because only a small amount of coal burns inside at any time, the automatic domestic coal boiler delivers stable, optimal output. Boiling is ruled out even during a power cut. Operating features:
Once the automatically fed coal boiler is started, it burns continuously.
Ignition is needed only once per heating season.
Fuel is added to the hopper once every 4-7 days.
The equipment operates in start-stop mode: it stops periodically when the set heat-carrier temperature is reached and then restarts to bring the heating back to the set temperature. The automation takes care of this.
The unit has a fuel hopper with an auger that feeds fuel automatically.
In operation, the unit performs the following tasks.
It controls the air supply to the combustion zone, which ensures even fuel combustion and an efficiency of 90%.
The operating mode is determined by special sensors based on the set temperature.
The automation works as follows.
It analyses the interior of the automatic coal boiler.
It analyses the heat-carrier vessel.
It determines the current pressure.
A command is sent to the air supply controller. Increasing or decreasing the supply rate heats or cools the water.
The controllers run on electricity, so the equipment is power-dependent.
Pros and cons of automatic coal boilers
The units have many advantages:
metered fuel feed;
long burning time even from a single load;
automatic shutdown in the event of overheating;
a perfectly designed technology that improves draught and heat transfer.
There are many other advantages too.
Depending on the model and the preferred combustion mode, different fuels can be used: wood, pellets, briquettes.
The automatic heating system complies with established environmental standards. The combustion methods used by the developer burn the fuel so thoroughly that no soot, carbon deposits or smoke are formed.
An automated smart coal boiler pays for itself very quickly.
For uninterrupted operation, the unit is connected to the mains via a UPS and a voltage stabiliser.
The only drawback is a small build-up of dust. When firing with coal, fine particles collect in the furnace, and over time, at high concentrations, this could cause an explosion. To reduce dust, the automatic coal heating boiler is fitted with a dust collector.
How to choose an automatic coal boiler by output and size
When buying equipment such as an automatic coal boiler, think carefully about every parameter so you are not disappointed later.
Optimal output: 1 kW per 10 m²
Fuel type. When choosing, consider price, delivery costs and storage. Coal is the most popular option.
Fuel loading method (horizontal or vertical).
Burning time, which depends on the size of the combustion chamber.
Uneven heat output. With coal you may notice that rooms quickly become stuffy and the radiators cool down a few hours later. A heat accumulator is needed to distribute heat evenly.
Thermal performance characteristics are also taken into account.
Type of automation. Modern long-burning automatic coal boilers have a microprocessor controller. At the customer's request, the unit can be supplemented with self-cleaning and remote control systems.
Fuel storage volume. Capacity should be sufficient for 7 days of firing.
Output. Calculate it using the formula of 1 kW per 10 m².
Protection rating. When coal is used in a boiler room, combustible dust is more likely to accumulate, so the control unit must be protected to at least IP 26.
Also consider:
The permitted coal size. Most automatic coal boilers run on coal up to 50 mm
Multi-fuel capability or specialisation in one fuel type.
The efficiency of the complete system.
The specifications and performance of the hopper.
Motor voltage. For houses, systems that run on 220 V are recommended.
